The Winners of the 86th Annual Academy Awards!

86oscars_logo

This is the first year at the Oscars in awhile where I agreed with a lot of the nominations, though I still feel like Inside Llewyn Davis got snubbed for Best Picture and Best Song. So as the winners were revealed in last night’s broadcast, I felt my approval of the awards going up and my ballot contest win felt more secure (I won the contest with 16 correct predictions!) (not-so-humble-brag). Honestly, there were quite a few nominees this year that could have won and I would have been happy with the results but there was one category that I absolutely could not agree with, Best Documentary Feature. After having watched all five nominees for the documentary category, I was sure about one thing, 20 Feet from Stardom had no chance at winning. It was up against some truly interesting/moving/disturbing/powerful films and 20 Feet from Stardom failed to be much of any of those, except maybe mildly interesting. I was sure The Act of Killing was going to win and when they announced the winner for the category, I let loose a good ole verbal, “what the f*@k.”

Barring the documentary category, I was pretty satisfied. Gravity of course swept a lot of the technical categories and Alfonso Cuaron’s best director win felt entirely justified as he directed the shit out of that movie. I was really happy to see Matthew McConaughey take Best Actor as he’s an incredible actor (you should absolutely be watching True Detective by the way) and it was nice to see him get some recognition. 12 Years a Slave took the honor of Best Picture and deservedly so as it was really phenomenal. I thought Ellen was pretty funny as the host and I would like to see her return to host sometime in the future.

What did you think of this year’s winners? Do you agree with who won or do you think someone else/another movie should have taken the award? Voice your opinions below!
