Welcome to 31 Days of ’80s Horror boys and ghouls! Each day in October I’ll be posting about a horror film from the 1980s, some of which you may have heard of, others may be a little more obscure. This is the month to celebrate all things spooky so I wanted to present some films from my favorite era of the horror genre. I hope you enjoy the column and discover some new ’80s horror flicks to watch, or rewatch, whatever the case may be. I know I’ll be checking out some of these ghastly tales myself since I’ve come across a few that even I’ve never heard of! So on with the horror! On with the terror! On with the ’80s!
Return of the Living Dead Part II
A new generation of ghouls is spawned when a barrel of nerve gas, fallen off an Army truck, is cracked open by neighborhood toughs. The escaping greenish vapor turns the living into zombies and the dead into the not-so-dead. Of course, it seeps into the local cemetery… with groundbreaking results. See a severed hand on a spree in the back seat of a crowded car. Gasp as a zombie torso – and its missing legs – haplessly seek each other along a hospital corridor. Search no longer, fright fans: this deadfest is lively fun!
Writer/director Ken Wiederhorn (Freddy’s Nightmares, Shock Waves) delivers this sequel based on Dan O’Bannon’s original, The Return of the Living Dead. The movie stars James Karen (Poltergeist), Thom Mathews (Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI, The Return of the Living Dead), Michael Kenworthy (The Blob), Dana Ashbrook (Waxwork) and Suzanne Snyder (Killer Klowns from Outer Space). I’ve yet to see this film but I’ve heard a lot of people say that, despite it being a sequel, the movie almost feels like a loose remake with the (broad) comedy cranked up a few notches from the previous film. It sounds like if you want some ’80s silliness and (literally) eye-popping special effects, you may want to check this one out.
