Welcome to 31 Days of ’80s Horror boys and ghouls! Each day in October I’ll be posting about a horror film from the 1980s, some of which you may have heard of, others may be a little more obscure. This is the month to celebrate all things spooky so I wanted to present some films from my favorite era of the horror genre. I hope you enjoy the column and discover some new ’80s horror flicks to watch, or rewatch, whatever the case may be. I know I’ll be checking out some of these ghastly tales myself since I’ve come across a few that even I’ve never heard of! So on with the horror! On with the terror! On with the ’80s!

Terror Train

It’s New Year’s Eve, and a group of college coeds have planned a masquerade bash aboard a chartered train. What they didn’t plan on was that a knife-wielding psycho would crash the party and begin slaughtering the guests one by one! Who is this brutal costumed killer? Could it be the mysterious magician with a talent for swordplay . . . a former frat pledge with an axe to grind . . . or any number of other guests, both invited and uninvited?

This is a pretty fun slasher flick from 1980 that stars Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween, The Fog), Ben Johnson (The Last Picture Show), Hart Bochner (Die Hard), D.D. Winters (52 Pick-Up) and magician David Copperfield. The movie is directed by Roger Spottiswoode, who would go on to direct the James Bond flick, Tomorrow Never Dies. Terror Train fits the mold of a standard slasher, with a variety of kills and some nudity, but it’s simplicity ends up being its best trait. The mystery of the killer’s identity is well established and the reveal is satisfying. The characters are drawn pretty well for a movie of this kind and all the actors are fun to watch, including David Copperfield as the slightly cheesy magician. All this works in making Terror Train a memorable and entertaining entry into the slasher genre.
