Welcome to 31 Days of ’80s Horror boys and ghouls! Each day in October I’ll be posting about a horror film from the 1980s, some of which you may have heard of, others may be a little more obscure. This is the month to celebrate all things spooky so I wanted to present some films from my favorite era of the horror genre. I hope you enjoy the column and discover some new ’80s horror flicks to watch, or rewatch, whatever the case may be. I know I’ll be checking out some of these ghastly tales myself since I’ve come across a few that even I’ve never heard of! So on with the horror! On with the terror! On with the ’80s!

Prom Night

Four Hamilton High School seniors have been hiding the truth of what happened to ten-year-old Robin Hammond for six long years. But someone saw what they did and is preparing for revenge – a prom night killing spree. Hooded, masked, and wielding an axe, he’ll stalk his prey in the dark, empty halls, striking when his victims are alone. And just as the spotlight falls upon the newly crowned king and queen, the killer will show everyone what his favorite game to play is!

Prom Night may have been one of the many slasher movies to imitate Halloween and it may not be the best of the genre but there are plenty of good moments in the movie to remember it fondly. This 1980 horror film even featured Halloween‘s star, Jamie Lee Curtis, who was on a streak of horror movies in the ’80s that included The Fog, Terror Train and Halloween II. Prom Night is also one of the last few horror movies in the ’80s to feature disco dancing as if it was still cool. The movie comes from screenwriter William Gray (The Changeling) with a story credit given to Robert Guza Jr. (Curtains) and director Paul Lynch, who went on to direct various episodes of The Twilight Zone. Prom Night features a cast that includes Leslie Nielsen of The Naked Gun and Airplane! fame and Anne-Marie Martin (The Boogens). Horror fans should definitely check Prom Night out, if you haven’t already, as it has the scream queen of all scream queens in it, so it’s like essential viewing. Right?

I disliked the remake too. But.. Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou.. definitely worth watching in my opinion. It’s so different than the original and has a bit of some crazy fun too it.

One of my faves! Really hated the remake and haven’t seen the sequels though. There just didn’t seem to be a point in continuing the series.
