31 Days of ’80s Horror – The Kindred

31 Days of Horror Day 3 banner

Welcome to 31 Days of ’80s Horror boys and ghouls! Each day in October I’ll be posting about a horror film from the 1980s, some of which you may have heard of, others may be a little more obscure. This is the month to celebrate all things spooky so I wanted to present some films from my favorite era of the horror genre. I hope you enjoy the column and discover some new ’80s horror flicks to watch, or rewatch, whatever the case may be. I know I’ll be checking out some of these ghastly tales myself since I’ve come across a few that even I’ve never heard of! So on with the horror! On with the terror! On with the ’80s!

The Kindred

John Hollins, a young scientist, is delighted to learn that his geneticist mother has awoken from her coma years after she suffered a horrible car crash. During their reunion, he learns that she was trying to put an end to a misguided experiment at her home on the night of the accident and reveals to John that he has a brother named Anthony. After his mother is murdered, John travels to his run-down boyhood home with his girlfriend, a group of pals, and a mysterious acolyte of his mother’s named Melissa. The group plans to search for clues about his mother’s research and John’s supposed sibling. The young scientist begins to uncover the truth about his mother’s genetic experiments and learns that something lives in the bowels of his childhood home. Then his mother’s monstrous creation starts picking off his friends one by one. What horrors lie in John’s house? And will he reach the terrifying truth behind his mother’s experiments before it’s too late?

This seemingly forgotten creature feature from 1987 looks like a lot of fun and I really hope I get to see it at some point. I really dig the practical effects seen in the trailer and I like seeing Rod Steiger (The Amityville Horror) playing a bit of an overzealous scientist. The Kindred comes from a pair of directors, Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow, who gave us the low-budget cult favorite The Dorm that Dripped Blood. The cast is rounded out by David Alan Brooks (Manhunter), Kim Hunter (Zira from Planet of the Apes), Amanda Pays (Leviathan), Talia Balsam (Crawlspace, Mona Sterling on Mad Men), and Peter Frechette (The Hills Have Eyes 2).

How to watch The Kindred

Sadly, The Kindred doesn’t look to be readily available on any current home video/digital format. Maybe we’ll be lucky and Scream Factory or Blue Underground or some other fine home video distributor will release this on Blu-ray in the future. However, those of you who still have a VHS player, The Kindred is available on VHS. (Buy The Kindred VHS on Amazon)
