This is one of the weirder news bits I’ve come across recently. Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and his production company, Bazelevs, have created a pre-production sales trailer for the horror thriller, Squirrels. The killer squirrel movie was shopping around for financing using the trailer embedded below and looks to have gotten it from Red Sea Media. The screenplay was written by Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin from an original idea by Bekmambetov. There is no director or cast involved yet.
The sales trailer looks like an absurdist take on Hitchcock’s The Birds. If Squirrels actually makes it to theaters nationwide, I may just have to see it opening weekend. I don’t know the direction they’d take with the film but I certainly hope, given the squirrely nature of the movie, that it takes its premise and goes insane with it to deliver an over-the-top B-movie experience. I want the squirrel version of Eight Legged Freaks or Snakes on Plane but on super crack. Here’s the official synopsis:
When a young man’s estranged father is killed under suspicious circumstances, he returns home for the first time in years to get to the bottom of the mystery. Hoping to uncover some logical explanation, he instead finds his mom’s sleazy new boyfriend, a natural gas company buying up the town, an angry female sheriff who happens to be his ex-girlfriend, and an army of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path due to an erosion of their food chain as a result of environmental destruction by the gas company.
What do you think of the prospect of Squirrels? Are you shaking your head asking why? Or are you kind of gleefully excited for such a ridiculous movie?
