The East Teaser Trailer

The East still

The East is the new film from director Zal Batmanglij and writer/actress Brit Marling, who gave us the excellent Sound of My Voice last year.  The filmmaking duo are back with this new techno-thriller that follows Sarah Moss (Marling), a brilliant operative for an elite private intelligence firm, whose top objective is to ruthlessly protect the interests of their A-list corporate clientele.  She is assigned to go undercover to infiltrate an anarchist collective known for executing covert attacks upon major corporations.  Living amongst them in an effort to get closer to their members, Sarah finds herself unexpectedly torn between two worlds as she starts to fall in love with the group’s charismatic leader, finding her life and her priorities irrevocably changed.

The East made its premiere recently at the Sundance Film Festival and has been getting some good reviews since then.  I was a big fan of Sound of My Voice and I’m pretty excited to see what Batmanglij and Marling have done in constructing a more mainstream thriller.  The teaser trailer looks excellent and I like the cast, which includes Brit Marling, Ellen Page, Alexander Skarsgård, Patricia Clarkson and Julia Ormond.  No release date for The East has been set yet but Fox Searchlight looks to be on distributing detail and I’d assume we’d hear about the film’s theatrical plans soon.
