The Blu-ray Crypt – Nov. 27

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend.  I’m just now getting back into the swing of things over here on Monster Popcorn after a few days off.  I trust everyone got some snazzy deals on movies over Black Friday weekend/Cyber Monday.  It’s a light week as far as new Blu-ray titles, which is fine by me since December has quite a few purchase-worthy movies coming out.   Time to start your Christmas shopping.

ParaNorman 3D

This is easily my pick for the best release this week.  ParaNorman was a lot of fun and had a legitimately good story behind it.  I wrote my thoughts down about the film back when it was in theaters (which you can read here) but I will say that ParaNorman is quality, family-friendly entertainment.  As a horror fan, the movie certainly appealed to me but the film can be enjoyed by anyone.  It utilizes the genre to send a really positive message to kids and adults will certainly appreciate the mature handling of the themes and characters.  It’s also pretty funny.  I can’t wait to revisit it.  ParaNorman comes highly recommended.

I missed Lawless in the theaters.  The reaction to the film didn’t seem overwhelmingly positive, nor did it seem negative, but the lukewarm reception ended up making me prioritizing other films before seeing this one.  That being said, I am still really interested in checking this out.  The film sports a pretty badass line-up of actors including Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Guy Pearce, Jason Clark and Gary Oldman.  That cast right there is plenty enough reason to see the film.  I just hope the story is able to match the level of talent involved.

The Apparition

I saw this one in the theaters and wow was it terrible.  As bad as it was though, I did have a good time with it if I’m being honest.  The Apparition just barely falls into that “it’s so bad, it’s good” category.  The acting, writing and directing are pretty terrible across the board.  Things happen in the movie that seem out of the blue and character motivations seem all screwy but what else would you expect from a movie whose main selling point is Ashley Greene parading around in her underwear.  I’d say rent it if you are interested but don’t expect any greatness from this horror flick.

Men In Black 3

I remember seeing the original Men In Black and liking it moderately and then MIB 2 happened and I lost all interest in the franchise.  Factor that in with my typical avoidance of Will Smith’s ego on screen and you may see why I haven’t seen this newest entry.  I honestly don’t think I’d ever be interested enough to watch MIB 3 and if I want to watch something from the MIB franchise, I’d probably just revisit the original.  The cover art pictured above is for the Best Buy exclusive steelbook case.

Maybe, just maybe, I’ll give the third a shot one day.. but I’m going to be stubborn and say that is a long day off haha.

I guess we have to agree to disagree on MiB… I enjoyed all three, but thought the third was the best in story and production. ))
