Lionsgate Has Much Ado About Whedon

Much Ado About Nothing, the movie that Joss Whedon made while he was making The Avengers, has been bought by Lionsgate after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival.  Whedon had a small break during the production of The Avengers and decided to use that time to make an impromptu micro-budget take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing using many actors he’s worked with previously and using his own house as the set for the film.  Lionsgate, and sister company Roadside Attractions, made the deal to acquire North American distribution of the film days after it premiered.  This marks the second Whedon film that Lionsgate will have released after it distributed the Drew Goddard/Joss Whedon penned Cabin in the Woods.

Whedon commented on the acquisition, “I’m thrilled to be working with my cronies at Lionsgate again, and with the Roadside team. That they all embrace a Shakespearean romance with the same enthusiasm they had for Cabin in the Woods shows that they’re exactly the mad fools we want to be partying — I mean working — with.”

Much Ado About Nothing is the first film from Whedon’s newly created Bellwhether Pictures, which also has the sci-fi romance In Your Eyes and Dr. Horrible 2 in various stages of development.  I’m not typically someone that is dying to see a Shakespearean film but with Whedon writing and directing and a cast that includes Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Fran Kranz, Clark Gregg, Sean Maher, Reed Diamond, Tom Lenk, Ashley Johnson and Riki Lindhome, I can’t help but get really excited to see the film.

Cast has so many goodies in it, but Amy Acker steals my heart every time (FRED!). Entirely needless to say, but can’t wait for this!
