Popcorn News – Aug. 23

James Gunn (Slither, Super) is Marvel’s top choice to direct their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie.  There are a few other directors in the running like Peyton Reed (Bring It On, Yes Man) and the Half Nelson directing team of Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden but Marvel is currently talking exclusively with Gunn about boarding the project. Rumors are abound that Disney is looking to reboot The Rocketeer.  It’s expected that the studio will meet with various writers for a take on a new film. (Vulture)

The Girl Who Played With Fire, the sequel to the American remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, appears to still be moving forward.  Scribe Steve Zaillian is hard at work on the screenplay and the film is slated to hit in 2014 at the earliest.  It is unknown if David Fincher will return to direct but stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are contracted for the sequel. Eli Roth’s fake trailer for Thanksgiving from the 2007 feature film, Grindhouse, looks like it will finally happen.  Roth recently stated in an interview that they’ve finally broke the story and that he is working with the writers of Clown, Chris Ford and Jon Watts, as well as his writing partner Jeff Rundell to complete a script soon. Universal Studios is planning a Videodrome remake.  They’ve tapped Ehren Kruger (Transformers: Dark of the Moon, The Ring) to script the film with an unknown director, Adam Berg, helping the picture.  Universal has also stated they want to turn it into a “large-scale sci-fi action thriller.” (Ain’t It Cool)

Trouble continues for the ambitious movie/tv project The Dark Tower based upon the books of Stephen King.  The project was set up at NBC Universal before they dumped it.  Warner Bros. and HBO picked up the project when it became available but have now decided to turn it down.  There is still hope for The Dark Tower however, as Media Rights Capital, who have the upcoming Matt Damon sci-fi film Elysium coming soon and released the hit Seth McFarlane hit Ted, is in talks to take on the project.  (Deadline)

Anna Kendrick (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, the Twilight series) is the front-runner in securing the female lead role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  She looks to have some competition with two other potential actresses, Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night). Two stills have been published from the upcoming remake of Carrie which stars Chloe Moretz as the titular character.  The stills show a bloody Carrie and her mother, played by Julianne Moore. (EW)

Steven Quale, director of Final Destination 5, is currently in Detroit shooting a new found-footage tornado thriller for New Line which has just been given the title, Black Sky.  The film stars Richard Armitage (The Hobbit films), Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead), Matt Walsh, Nathan Kress, Arlen Escarpeta, Jeremy Sumpter, Kyle Davis and Jon Reep. Universal is courting Jim Carrey to star in Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall as a character named The Colonel.  If Carrey signs on, he’d be playing someone who helps galvanize the team of misfit superheroes in order to fight evil. (Deadline)

It was thought that a movie adaptation of the Garth Ennis/Darrick Robertson comic book, The Boys, was dead in the water.  But based on a recent tweet from Adam McKay, who is attached to the project, it looks like Paramount has resumed development of the film. (SuperHeroHype)

Netflix and DirecTV are in talks to revive The Killing after AMC cancelled the show after two seasons.  (TV Line)
