The first official trailer for Paranormal Activity 4, and a new one-sheet poster, has arrived online! I had thought this new film would have directly followed the events in the third movie, which was a prequel to the first two films. Instead, it seems to have picked up around or after the first film and looks to center on a new cast. I don’t doubt that there will be connective tissue between this fourth entry and the rest of the films but I was hoping to see where the story went after the third film ended. Perhaps they will still fill us in on that but as far as I can tell, which honestly isn’t all that much from the trailer, this is moving the storyline of the Paranormal Activity franchise past the events we’ve already seen. Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who co-directed the third film, are back on directing duties for the new entry which comes out on October 19 of this year.
The Paranormal Activity trailers have always been a bit of a mixed bag for me. The trailer for the first film showed too much but got me pretty excited to see the film. The trailer for the third film failed to instill confidence that the film would be any good (the movie, however, made for one of the better movie going experiences of last year and renewed my interest in the franchise) but again showed too much, though they were clever in that some of the material they showed were from deleted scenes allowing them to not spoil everything. So I watched this new one apprehensively and mostly out of curiousity for the direction of the new film. Now that I’ve seen it, I don’t think I need to see any more marketing materials before I see the movie. So as October approaches, I’m going to avoid any further trailers or TV spots so that I can go in unspoiled. Being a fan of the last film, I knew walking out of the theater last year that I was going to see this new one anyhow so I was pre-sold on Paranormal Activity 4. I can’t wait for October!
