Monster Popcorn Gets A Shout Out From Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman!

While at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, I ran into Lloyd Kaufman, President of Troma Entertainment, and he kindly offered to record a brief video clip plugging Monster Popcorn!   He was very funny and it was a great honor to have him do this.  I didn’t even have to say anything as Lloyd carried the clip and I was just enjoying the moment.  It was completely off the cuff and Lloyd made some humorous references to one of my favorite filmmakers, James Gunn.*

Troma Entertainment has been around for nearly 40 years.  Lloyd Kaufman and his team have produced and distributed countless amounts of entertaining films over the years like The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke ‘Em High, Tromeo & Juliet, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD and Mother’s Day, to name a few.  Troma movies may not be for everyone, but that is part of their appeal.  They are well-known for going beyond what is traditionally deemed as tasteful and often provide films that are extreme and over the top when it comes to gore, sex or humor.  It’s all in good fun and when you watch a Troma movie, you know you are in for a fun time.

My first exposure to Troma, oddly enough, was when I was a kid.  I didn’t see any of their movies then but was familiar with The Toxic Avenger animated series spin-off, The Toxic Crusaders.  I even remember the action figures for the show.  It wasn’t until much later that I discovered Troma for it’s edgier entertainment.  I admittedly haven’t seen all of their more popular films yet, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD is high on my list of Troma films to watch next, but I’ve seen quite a few like The Toxic Avenger, Tromeo & Juliet and Lollilove, which marked the directorial debut of Jenna Fischer (Pam on NBC’s The Office).  I look forward to continuing exploring Troma’s vast catalogue of movies (and may even do some Blu-ray reviews of some of their titles in the future).  If you’d like to do the same, feel free to show Lloyd Kaufman and Troma some support by heading over to the Troma Shop and pick up some DVDs and Blu-rays of your favorites or of ones you are interested in.  They have the upcoming Father’s Day 4-Disc Blu-ray set coming out on August 7 in a deluxe numbered edition (you can watch the trailer for that film here) and also have some cool Limited Edition Big Box VHS Sets of The Toxic Avenger for sale now.

Be sure to follow Lloyd Kaufman on Twitter (@lloydkaufman) for more Troma updates and to keep an eye out for future Troma releases!

* To be fair to Mr. Gunn, he had nothing to do with the video clip.  James Gunn has never been contacted to endorse Monster Popcorn.  His name came up because I had purchased a blu-ray copy of Tromeo & Juliet (which Gunn wrote) before recording the clip and Lloyd was tossing some humor into the video after a brief discussion on James Gunn’s work.
