UPDATED! Lionsgate Zeroing In On Catching Fire Director

With Gary Ross’ exit of The Hunger Games franchise, it looks like Lionsgate is looking to fill the director position as soon as they can.  They are going to have to since production of Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games, is aiming for an August production start date.  Some of the names currently being tossed around for the position are Bennet Miller (Moneyball), Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend), Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block).  It’s reported by Deadline that Miller is interested but may lose the position based on scheduling.  Bayona may be too busy as well and it’s not clear if Cornish actually took a meeting about the sequel yet or not.  That, ufortunately, may leave Francis Lawrence to take the reigns.

I personally would be interested in seeing any of these guys except Francis Lawrence be hired for Catching Fire.  I feel like Lawrence would be a step down in quality from Ross and, while I did enjoy Constantine, Lawrence’s output since then has been less than stellar.  I love Joe Cornish and he’d be my choice between the four directors considered but he seems the least likely at this point.

My personal pick would be Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers), whose been tweeting about how he’s available and very willing to direct the picture.  I’d love to see what West would do with a bigger budget and to have him be afforded the opportunity to make a film that is pretty much a guaranteed success.  It’d be a nice way to allow him to do a studio project that would also beef up his clout when it comes to making the films he’s really passionate about making.  Sadly, I don’t think Lionsgate has even considered him as a possibility.

Who do you guys want to see direct Catching Fire?

*UPDATED*  It’s now being reported that Francis Lawrence has been offered the job to direct Catching Fire.  Well, my least favorite option looks to be the one.  Hope he can pull it off.

To be honest it’s a shame that Ross will not direct the sequel. He has a very important reason, he would not be able to make the movie he wants to do because of timing. It’s a shame because he co-wrote the movie and I think that the take that they did for the movie was great. Hopefully they keep it in the same direction. Miller would be a great idea, he did an awesome job on Moneyball. Cornish would be good to and it would be an interesting mix.

If anything Cuaron should do it and his name has been thrown around a bit.

I agree on Cornish being a great choice. Is it not Attack the Block? It says so on IMDB as well as the blu-ray cover.

JOE CORNISH. And I really don’t like this thing where Attack of the Block became Attack The Block. It’s bizarre and I am opposed to change. (half-kidding)
