Piranha 3DD Aims For Shameless B-Movie Glory

If I’m being totally honest, I’m actually really looking forward to Piranha 3DD.  I thought Piranha 3D was entertaining but a little lacking in spots.  The sequel looks to fully embrace it’s B-movie nature in that the piranha can now swim through plumbing to get at you and Ving Rhames’ character now has Grindhouse-inspired gun legs.  The moment where Rhames says “get me my legs” and then opens fire on the piranha was when it had me.  The people behind the scenes of this sequel carry my interest further since this is a reteaming of director John Gulager with screenwriting team Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.  All three got their start in the film business through the HBO show, Project Greenlight.  Their first film, Feast, had fun moments but was just alright.  I’m not unabashedly huge fans of theirs by any means but I am curious to see what they do with the film.

Piranha 3DD is a modern exploitation film, something I’m personally happy to have playing in theaters across America.  I know that the film targets a very specific audience and that not everyone will be excited for a movie like this as much as I am.  I just have a soft spot for B-movie/exploitation films.  There is something endearing about the shamelessness of those types of movies.  While I’m all for the quality of movies at the theater being greatly improved, there’s nothing wrong with a little guilty pleasure flick.  Variety is the spice of life after all.  I’m hoping for utter B-movie insanity coupled with fun gore and shameless nudity.
