Popcorn News – Feb. 16

Guillermo del Toro will direct Beast for Warner Bros.  The film is a new take on the Beauty and the Beast tale with Andrew Davies writing the script.  Harry Potter star Emma Watson is in the negotiations process to headline the period film.  (Variety)

Gina Carano (Haywire) is set to star in In the Blood, an action thriller in the vein of Taken.  Carano will play a wife who recklessly pursues the men that she believes kidnapped and killed her husband.  John Stockwell (Turistas, Into the Blue) is set to direct and the stunt team from Haywire looks likely to rejoin Carano on the film as well.  Shooting is expected to start sometime in late spring or early summer of this year. Steven Spielberg spoke of Peter Jackson’s intent to shoot the sequel to The Adventures of Tintin right after he’s done with The Hobbit.  Spielberg also goes on to say that they have an outline for the film but are not ready to tell the world what story, or stories, it will be based upon.  (Total Film)

Universal is reviving their plans to make Dracula Year Zero.  Alex Proyas was attached to direct with Sam Worthington starring but that is no longer the case.  Gary Shore is in negotiations to direct. (Deadline)

A new poster for the Luc Besson produced sci-fi auctioneer, Lockout.  The film stars Guy Pearce, Maggie Grace and Peter Stormare.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter writer Seth Grahame-Smith spoke about meeting with Michael Keaton about Beetlejuice 2.  Keaton is apparently very enthusiastic about revisiting the character and Warner Bros is making it a priority for development.  No script has been written yet. Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle: Los Angeles) is in talks to direct the new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.  The film will be produced by Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. (Variety)

Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, The Lovely Bones) has been cast as the lead role in The Order of the Seven.  The project was previously titled Snow and the Seven before the Snow White angle was taken out.  The script has since been reworked and will center on a band of outlaw warriors that come upon a young British expatriate in Hong Kong who is being chased by an ancient evil. David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be released on March 20th on Blu-ray and DVD.  The 3-disc Blu-ray combo pack will contain more than four hours of behind the scenes footage as well as an UltraViolet digital copy.

Michael Mann is currently in talks to direct The Big Stone Grid.  It’s described as a “hard-edged thriller in the vein of Seven and Marathon Man, about two decorated detectives who uncover a terrifying extortion ring that operates within the secret underbelly of New York City.” (Deadline)

Brian Taylor, one half of the directing team behind films like Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, will be doing a solo project based off the video game Twisted Metal.  He will be writing as well as directing the film which centers on combatants that compete to the death in armored weaponized cars. Paramount Pictures is looking to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion.  Veena Sud, the showrunner of AMC’s The Killing, will write the screenplay.  Will Smith apparently was in talks to produce and star in the film a couple years back but that apparently is not happening anymore. (Variety)

NBC has given a direct to series order of 13 episodes for Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal.  The TV show, based off of characters from Thomas Harris’ novels, involves a younger Hannibal Lecter and FBI agent Will Graham during the earlier days of their relationship.  (Entertainment Weekly)

Mel Gibson’s new film, Get the Gringo, has a new trailer available online.  The film, in which Gibson stars and co-wrote, will apparently be foregoing a theatrical release and instead premiere exclusively through DirecTV before hitting Blu-ray, DVD and VOD. (The Wrap)

Mattel will be selling a full scale replica of the hoverboard from Back to the Future II.  It will make whooshing sounds and be able to glide, not hover, over most surfaces (does not work on water).  The replica will undoubtedly be a high priced item which will be available for pre-order on March 1st.  (Ain’t It Cool News)
