Evil Dead Remake To Swallow Your Soul

So there’s been news of an Evil Dead remake for quite some time now (since 2004).  Personally, I don’t need a remake, I want a direct sequel to Army of Darkness with Bruce Campbell reprising the role of Ash and Sam Raimi directing.  I’ve wanted that to happen for years and have always taken the possibility of a remake to mean the death of Evil Dead 4.  It would be kind of odd to do a remake and then continue the storyline from the previous trilogy right?

The details of the next Evil Dead picture were quite hazy earlier today and more details are starting to pop up.  Bloody Disgusting is reporting that this new entry in the franchise is a “quasi-remake.”  This could be a good thing.  If it is not a full on remake and perhaps more of a reboot then it could be possible that Bruce shows up as Ash in the film.  I could see something where an older Ash is tired of all the deadites and finds a way to cowardly curse some other guy or girl to be plagued by deadites (but in good ole Sam Raimi fashion, I’m sure Ash would take quite a beating if not death since Raimi lovingly likes to physically abuse his best friends on film).

The only other details we know is that Bob Murawski (editor of Army of Darkness, the Spider-man films and Drag Me to Hell) is going to Detroit to work on the project.  Then Bruce Campbell (who has joined Twitter @GroovyBruce) replied to a fan who asked “I won’t believe in a new Evil Dead film until I see it. Or at least not until @GroovyBruce tells me to believe in it.”  Bruce said “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”  So you have a confirmation from Campbell himself.  Then the last thing to pop up was that Fede Alvarez (Federico Alvarez) is the director on the film with Raimi producing under his Ghost House banner.  Alaverez got noticed for his short sci-fi film Panic Attack! (which you can see below).  It’s being said that casting has already begun for a low budget shoot before Raimi tackles Oz, The Great and Powerful.

So it seems that a new entry in the Evil Dead franchise is happening.  Will Bruce be in it?  I truly hope so.  I really wanted Raimi in the director’s chair but I know he’s been wanting to see what Evil Dead would be like in someone else’s hands and bringing it to a new generation.  But it’s good that Raimi is involved as a producer at least.  Hopefully we will know more about the project soon and have a clearer picture of what to look for in the film.
