In the second spotlight of the week, I’m going to focus on another new YouTube channel that you should absolutely be sure to check out, Geek & Sundry. This new channel comes from the geek-minded internet queen, Felicia Day. Day is the creator/writer/star of the very popular web series The Guild which has had five very successful (hilarious) seasons thus far. She’s also acted in countless beloved TV shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Dollhouse and Eureka to name a few. As far as this writer is concerned, Felicia Day deserves every bit of attention you can give as she has proven time and time again that she’s not only super creative but she’s also incredibly humble and appreciative of everyone who takes the time to watch her work. As a long standing member of the geek community myself, it’s really nice to see someone that understands that we’re all in this together regardless if you are the one producing content or if you are consuming it. She’s developed a wonderful sense of community amongst the geek and internet audiences, one that will undoubtedly grow with Geek & Sundry.
So what does Geek & Sundry have in store for all of us? Well here’s a rundown:
Hosted by geek goddess Felicia Day, The FLOG is a spirited, eccentric and quirky adventure through life. Join Felicia each week as she explores new hobbies and experiences, curates links from across the web and connects with her favorite people: her fans! This is probably the show I’m most excited about as I think it’ll be fun to see Day try out new things. Her enthusiasm can be infectious and it should make for good times. The show premieres on April 2nd, 2012.
Wil Wheaton hosts this fun, lively show where “Celebrity Poker” meets table top board games! In each episode, Wil plays a different game with celebrity guests from film, TV, and YouTube. Filled with witty banter and cheeky camaraderie, Tabletop introduces viewers to the best of tabletop gaming. This show should be worth watching just for the conversations, which most assuredly will be quite entertaining. Wil Wheaton is a pretty funny guy and I’m sure there will be quite a few guests on the show that will interest viewers. I’m hoping to see Nathan Fillion pop up on the show. Tabletop premieres on April 2nd, 2012.
DARK HORSE MOTION COMICS
The nation’s largest independent comic-book publisher brings a selection of their most popular titles to the video screen with Dark Horse Motion Comics. Using never before-seen motion graphics techniques, watch some of the comic world’s most iconic characters spring to life. I like seeing Felicia Day partnering up with Dark Horse and could see it becoming a beneficial relationship for both companies. The bigger question I have is, does this mean we will be seeing some of The Guild comics get turned into motion comics? I guess we’ll find out. The first of the motion comics will premiere on April 2nd, 2012.
SWORD & LASER
The popular podcast Sword & Laser can now been seen as well as heard on the YouTube screen! Hosts Veronica Belmont and Tom Merrit bring you the latest in tech, geek and entertainment news and engage in often irreverent, always dynamic discourse in this community-driven science fiction and fantasy-themed book club. Admittedly, I’ve never listened to the Sword & Laser podcast but I will checking out the show come April 13, 2012, when it premieres.
WRITTEN BY A KID
Stories told by 5-9 year olds are put in the hands of some of today’s coolest online directors including Rhett & Link, Dane Boedigheimer, Daniel Strange and more! All ages will love this visually stunning, often hilarious anthology series that brings the madness and magic of a child’s imagination to life. Having just read the first volume of Axe Cop, I know that giving the creative reigns over to a young kid can prove for genuinely great entertainment. This should be interesting to see a child’s imagination interpreted in visual form. Written By A Kid premieres on July 18, 2012.
Nerd music duo Paul and Storm bring their harmonies and smartly offbeat humor to this new comedy musical. The learning curve is steep when the two are tasked with reviving the flagging educational show of their childhoods in the face of villainous hipsters, ghosts who give bad advice and flammable puppets. I’m not familiar with Paul and Storm but I like the sound of the premise but it looks we’ll have to wait a little bit to see what the show is like as it premieres in Fall 2012.
In addition to these shows, The Guild, season 5, will be re-released through the channel as well! Be sure to subscribe to the Geek & Sundry YouTube channel to stay up to date on all their new releases and check out their website here!
Geek & Sundry is excecutive produced by Felicia Day, Kim Evey and Sheri Bryant.
